The Mpenda Mazingira Initiative was born out of a shared passion for environmental conservation and a commitment to community development. It all started in June 2019, when a group of 11 students from Ngong Township Primary School, consisting of 7 boys and 4 girls, came together with a common purpose. As enthusiastic scouts, led by our founder Abel, who was then the school’s Deputy Headboy and Scout Patrol Leader, we actively participated in various clean-up activities, tree planting campaigns, hikes, and community walks within Kajiado County, particularly in Ngong and Rongai towns.
Our journey, however, faced significant challenges in March 2020 with the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic. The lockdown forced all of us to stay home, and during this period, one of our members became pregnant, marking a particularly difficult time for us. In response, we turned to Abel for guidance and support. Despite the initial silence, Abel's determination to bring us together and make a positive impact in our community never wavered.

In January 2021, a new headteacher arrived at our school and initiated changes that included the destruction of a forested area we cherished and had maintained. This act of environmental degradation deeply affected us and ignited a collective resolve to restore and improve our local environment. Abel united us under the banner of replanting trees and nurturing the damaged area back to health.
Our dedication continued to grow, and in 2023, while we were in Form 2, we formalized our efforts by registering as a Community-Based Organization (CBO). This marked a significant milestone in our movement, expanding our focus to include mental health, boys' mentorship, and broader environmental conservation initiatives.
